How to Clean Stained Leather
If you have leather upholstery in your home, the first thing you should do when there is a stain is to clean it. Leather upholstery can absorb stains even before they have time to dry. Experts recommend that you pay attention to stains as soon as they happen, especially if they are caused by pets or spills.
Ink stain removal stick
If you have ink stains on your leather furniture, an Ink Off stain removal stick can help you get rid of the stain. However, you should avoid using Ink Off on suede or nubuck leather. This is because Ink Off works by lifting the colour from the leather, and if you use it on unprotected leather, you may end up losing the colour. Before you try to use Ink Off on stained leather, use masking tape to prevent the stain from spreading.
When using ink stain removal sticks, you should use them right away, as fresh ink stains are easier to remove than dried ones. If the stain has dried, you may need to repeat the process several times. Alternatively, you can use a white cotton cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol. Note that this method will transfer the dye to the fabric, so use caution when applying the white cotton cloth.
Melamine eraser
A melamine eraser is a great way to clean leather without using water or detergent. Its unique three-dimensional structure allows it to absorb dirt and stains in all textures, including leather. Its unique antibacterial property allows it to effectively remove even the deepest stains without damaging the finish.
It can also be used to clean bathroom surfaces. It can remove dirt, soap scum, and hair dye. It is safe for use on metal and ceramic surfaces and will not damage them. If you’re worried about the melamine eraser leaving a dull finish, just wipe it with water instead.
While a melamine eraser is an effective way to clean stained leather, it should be used carefully. It can damage the surface if it gets too dry, and should never be used directly on skin. It’s soft and feels plush but can remove the sealant from fine stone surfaces. Before using it on a leather or wood surface, test it in an inconspicuous area.
Ammonium hydroxide
Ammonium hydroxide can be used to clean stained leather. You can dilute it to about three drops per litre of water and then apply it to the stain. However, you must be careful because ammonia may damage leather. It is also harmful to wool fibers.
Before applying the chemical, it is important to spot test the stain. You can do it on the underside of the hem or on the inside seam of the leather. You can also use a piece of cloth to test the chemical on. Ensure that the cloth shows the color that you want to achieve or that the stain is no longer visible.
Besides applying the cleaner to the stain, you can also apply a dry adhesive. These are commonly available in bicycle repair kits and are suitable for applying to the leather. If these two methods are not effective, you can also use eucalyptus oil or shaving foam. After applying these solutions, you can wipe the area with a damp sponge or old toothbrush.
Salicylic acid
Luckily, many stains aren’t permanent, so you can often remove them without damaging your leather. The best method to use will depend on the stain, its age and the material it’s made of. Here are some tips: First, blot with a clean cloth after saturating the stain with vinegar and alcohol. You can also use a solution of washing up liquid and warm water to foam up the stain and then blot it off.
Alternatively, you can apply a paste of bicarbonate soda and water to remove the stain. You can also use hydrogen peroxide mixed with water. Afterwards, use a clean cloth to dry the fabric.
